A SMALL SUCCESS STORY

Born small and sickly, Hyperion at maturity was only 15.1 hh. He was almost gelded because of his unimpressive stature, but trainer George Lambton took a liking to the colt, noting that his head was full of character and courage.

Hyperion’s prestigious wins in 1933 were the Epsom Derby (in a record time of 2 minutes, 34 seconds) and the St. Leger stakes. Hyperion was one of the greatest Thoroughbred racehorse sires ever, with 527 foals, of whom 118 won stakes, including 7 winners of 11 English classics; he was also was the grandsire of the twentieth-century’s greatest racehorse sire, Northern Dancer.

Hyperion’s skeleton is displayed at the Animal Health Trust, and a lifesize statue stands in front of the Jockey Club offices (both in Newmarket, England).
